Weight loss surgery

Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, is performed on patients with obesity. There are several types of bariatric procedures, but all focus on making modifications to the digestive system with the goal of significant weight loss.

Life-changing bariatric surgery

When all other avenues have failed, weight loss is still possible with our help.

Weight loss procedures we offer

Our weight management program offers state-of-the-art bariatric surgeries designed to safely promote weight loss. We offer minimally invasive surgical procedures, combining compassion, skill and innovation, focusing on helping you achieve and maintain long-term weight loss. You may qualify for bariatric surgery if you:

  • Are 18 years old or older
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above
  • Have a BMI of 35 or above along with an obesity-related disease, such as arthritis, diabetes or sleep apnea

Our weight loss surgeons will work with you to understand your needs and goals and will guide you toward the procedure that is best for you.

Gastric sleeve

The gastric sleeve is a procedure in which our surgeon permanently reduces the size of your stomach into a smaller, banana-shaped sleeve-like space in order to limit the amount of food you can eat.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a procedure in which our surgeon closes off part of the stomach to create a small stomach pouch that restricts the amount of food that can be eaten without feeling full. The small intestine is separated into an upper portion and a lower portion, with the surgeon attaching the lower portion to the pouch, allowing the food to pass directly into the small intestine. The upper portion is then reconnected, supplying fluids to digest the food completely.

Nonsurgical weight management

Our programs also include medical services to support your weight loss goals. After assessing your overall health and nutrition details, we create a program that's right for you and includes mental health support, metabolic assessments, nutrition education, exercise guidance and educational classes. You can learn more about your medical weight loss options through our program at Mission Hospital.

Pediatric nutrition and weight management

If your child is struggling to get the proper nutrition they need or eat proper proportions, our registered dieticians can help. At Mission Children's Hospital's child nutrition and weight management program, we are available to educate you and your family through various therapies and educational tools. We also help your child if they have a chronic illness like feeding and swallowing issues, heart defects and cancer.

Bariatric surgery support and education

We understand that electing weight loss surgery is a decision to undertake a lifelong journey. Our care team partners with you to support you each step of the way. Leading up to your surgery, you consult with our weight loss surgeons, dieticians, exercise specialists and behavioral specialists. Together, your team provides presurgical support and education, effective postsurgical follow-up and monitoring. After your surgery, you will have access to counseling, support groups, education and lifestyle modification to help you maintain your health and ensure long-term success.
