Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that affects the body's production of glucose and insulin levels. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin. Type 2, gestational and prediabetes are all a result of an excess amount of sugar in the blood (high glucose levels).

Compassionate diabetes education and management

When you need help managing your diabetes, we offer the caring support you need.

At Mission Health's hospitals in Western North Carolina, we understand diabetes. Our skilled endocrinology and nutrition teams care for adults and children. We offer a range of services, including diabetes treatment, classes, dietitian consultations and ongoing support.

Types of diabetes we treat

Our diabetes doctors work together to help you manage your diabetes so you can lead a healthy life. We treat all types of diabetes, including:

  • Gestational diabetes
  • Prediabetes
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes

Our diabetes program

We are here to help you live well with diabetes. Our patient-centered approach involves endocrinologists, nurses, dietitians and pharmacists.

Services provided by our diabetes specialists

We offer support for both adults and children diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes, which includes type 1, 2 and gestational diabetes. Our program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association, and many of our staff are nationally-certified diabetes educators.

Individual consultations

We offer one-one-one consultations, in addition to a five-week, self-paced diabetes management course. Our specialists also cover the essentials in controlling your diabetes and making the right self-care decisions. You have the chance to work with a registered dietitian for nutrition needs and meal planning. We also offer medication reviews with our pharmacists.

Gestational diabetes education

If you receive a diabetes diagnosis during your pregnancy, we offer specialized one-on-one sessions, keeping your pregnancy in mind. Your sessions include an overview of gestational diabetes, training in monitoring your blood glucose levels and meal planning tips for balanced nutrition. Our endocrinologists focus on keeping you and your baby safe and healthy while minimizing risks.

Insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring training

This type of diabetes care for adults and children provides personalized training in using insulin pumps and managing continuous glucose monitoring therapies.

We also offer professional, continuous glucose monitoring for seven to 14 days. This is designed to provide better insight into daily glucose management, and allows our endocrinologists to identify patterns and recommend medications and lifestyle changes.

Pediatric diabetes care

Our pediatric endocrinologists specialize in treating disorders related to growth, such as hormonal, glandular and chronic illnesses, including diabetes.

These doctors use their specialized training to relate to kids and develop connections that encourage communication. We help ensure their cooperation in treatments that sometimes last a lifetime. If you believe your child could benefit from our services, have your family doctor make a referral.

For questions about our pediatric endocrinology services please call (828) 213-1740.

Diabetes support group

As a part of our diabetes care, we offer a free support group for adults with diabetes that meets monthly. It provides an opportunity for you to interact with others who are dealing with similar health concerns. Ask your doctor to refer you for an appointment, as a physician referral is needed to attend the support group.
