Specialty orthopedic programs

Our priority is ensuring that Western North Carolina communities have access to high-quality orthopedic care, regardless of age, activity level or location. Our dedicated specialists are ready to serve you at one of our hospitals or our walk-in clinic, with an eagerness to understand the complexities of your condition so that we can employ the best form of treatment.

Fracture prevention care

Fragility fractures typically occur if you're experiencing osteoporosis, a bone disease that results in decreased bone strength and increased fracture risk. Though fragility fractures can occur with any limb, they most commonly occur in the wrist, hip and spine.

Our family of hospitals specializes in preventive services. We provide personalized care that uses a variety of approaches, including:

  • Activity modification
  • Fall prevention therapy
  • Home care
  • Medications
  • Patient education
  • Supplements

Foot and ankle care

Foot and ankle disorders affect your ability to get around comfortably. When you come to us for care, our teams are ready with several treatments for your condition, such as arthroscopic procedures and fusion surgery. We also involve our physical rehabilitation services, to ensure you're able to return to function as fully as possible.

Hand and upper extremity care

Our experienced specialists understand how hand, wrist, arm and shoulder issues can impact your schedule, such as time with your family. At our hospitals, we offer several treatments, including microvascular surgery.

Hip care

In Western North Carolina, our specialists are the only ones who regularly perform arthroscopic procedures for hip conditions. This procedure cuts your healing time and reduces scarring. Coupled with rehab services, we work as a team to increase your range of motion and performance to a level that's safe and best for you.

Knee care

Our knee specialists care for a range of knee injuries and conditions and can employ methods that don't require joint replacement surgery. Some of our recommendations include lifestyle changes, such as weight loss. Other treatments may include noninvasive procedures, including arthroscopy or injections. We create a treatment plan that best fits your condition.

Musculoskeletal oncology

A diagnosis of bone cancer can be daunting, but our teams are here to get you through this challenging time. Our bone doctors consult with medical specialties, including oncology care, surgery, radiology and physical rehabilitation services to create a well-rounded care plan for adults and children. Your care team is with you from your first diagnosis through survivorship and ongoing follow-up.

Pediatric orthopedic care

We provide specialized orthopedic care for your children at our Mission Children's Hospital, where we always keep your child's growing body in mind while managing their treatment. We want to get your children back to engaging in the activities they love, so we offer a variety of services, including care for broken bones, ligament and tendon tears, birth abnormalities, growth plate fractures, hip dysplasia and sport-related conditions.

Sports medicine care

Our primary care sports medicine physicians provide full-service care for injuries sustained at both the recreational and professional levels. We take a multidisciplinary approach to sports-related issues, and consult with many medical specialties, including neurological care, physical rehabilitation and orthopedic surgery. Also, our team of certified athletic trainers can offer you onsite evaluation and injury care, while performing rehabilitative services as you recover from an injury. Our goal is to safely return you to full functionality, at the highest performance level you can manage.

Orthopedic trauma care

At Mission Hospital in Asheville, our fellowship-trained orthopedic trauma surgeons lead the only designated Level II Trauma Center in Western North Carolina. We're equipped to treat a wide range of injuries and quickly stabilize your condition to speed your healing. Throughout our family of hospitals, we are available 24/7 for emergency care when you need it, so that you always have access to the most advanced musculoskeletal services in the region.

Urgent care

Our network offers orthopedic and sports medicine urgent care clinics to treat injuries and conditions that are not considered emergencies. This walk-in clinic extends the services we offer at our hospitals by offering immediate injury evaluation, as well as treatment and management for non-emergency musculoskeletal disorders, sports injuries and sports-related concussions.

Joint replacement surgery

Orthopedic treatment may ultimately include joint replacement surgery if nonsurgical options have proven ineffective. If you need this surgery, we prioritize the least invasive techniques first. Some procedures are even offered as same-day surgeries, so you can spend most of your recovery in the comfort of your home.

The three main joint replacements we offer include:

  • Hip replacement surgery — Our surgeons specialize in total hip and anterior hip replacement procedures. In both procedures, we replace the hip and socket joints with prosthetic implants that restore movement and reduce pain. Anterior hip replacement offers the least disruption of surrounding tissues, as well as a faster recovery.
  • Knee replacement surgery — This technique gives you the option of total knee or partial knee replacement. With either procedure, your surgeon will repair or replace the joint. In total knee replacement, our surgeons replace the joint with a prosthetic. In partial knee replacement surgery, our surgeons repair the joint and preserve as much healthy tissue as possible.
  • Shoulder replacement surgery — In addition to total shoulder replacement, we offer reverse shoulder replacement. With this procedure, your orthopedic surgeon uses the shoulder muscle (deltoid), rather than the rotator cuff's muscles and tendons, to stabilize the joint. They use this method especially if you've had previous shoulder surgeries or severe rotator cuff injuries.

Walk-in orthopedic and sports medicine clinics

We offer walk-in orthopedic and sports medicine clinics to provide non-emergent care for injuries in active people and athletes ages twelve and older in the Asheville area. We understand that injuries don’t always happen during normal business hours, so we offer early morning office hours and convenient walk-in appointments so you can receive care on the same day that you need it – no appointment needed.
