Maternity Care at Mission Health

More than 4,000 new mothers choose to have their baby at Mission Health every year, more than any other birthing hospital in our region. It’s also why more doctors deliver babies at Mission than anywhere else in western North Carolina. Services

Labor and Delivery

Celebrate your baby’s birthday with us! Mission Health offers two conveniently located labor and delivery hospitals, Mission Hospital in Asheville and Mission Hospital McDowell in Marion. The birthing hospitals at Mission Health strive to provide the care you want during one of the most memorable times of your life. We offer supportive care for patients who desire minimal intervention and the safety of a hospital setting. We also offer the most critical care when your health or the health of your baby is at stake. Patient safety and satisfaction are our most important goals.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine Services

For women with high-risk pregnancies or complications that require advanced care, Mission Health’s maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) doctors are right by your side every step of the way, working collaboratively with other clinical specialists on your team. Our MFM specialists provide support for women with complex conditions before, during, and after pregnancy.

Neonatal Care and NICU

Mission Health is home to western North Carolina’s only Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where experts provide around-the-clock care to sick or premature babies.

Postpartum Care and Services

After a safe and healthy birth, you and your newborn will be transitioned to our mother-baby unit, a quiet and family-centered environment where parents and baby can bond. Postpartum nurses and lactation consultants can offer breastfeeding support. We’re available to answer any questions you have as a new parent. Highly skilled and specialized nurses will provide newborn care information so you feel prepared and ready for when it’s time to leave the hospital.

Preconception Health

If you are a woman of childbearing age, you should take a multivitamin with folic acid every day, recommends the NC Folic Acid Council, an outreach program of Mission Fullerton Genetics Center. Thanks to funding from the state legislature, health departments throughout the state offer these multivitamins at no cost and there's a full-time coordinator managing the western region. We focus in the community primarily on college campuses. We reach healthcare providers through presentations to private practice offices and health departments.
