Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity at Mission Health

Our standard of practice is to exist as a fair, equitable, healthy and inclusive organization that aligns with and supports our patients, our workforce and the communities that we serve.

How Do We Do That?

Our strategy focuses on five key areas:

  1. Empower a diverse workforce – Recruit, develop, promote and retain a diverse and inclusive workforce
  2. Education and training – Provide intentional and focused culturally competent care education opportunities to all team members
  3. Greater equity in care – Focus on eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in care provided to patients within Mission Health
  4. Drive community collaborations – Continue to engage relationships and partnerships that support and build capacity in the communities that we serve
  5. Value and engage partnerships – Identify and offer companies owned and operated by underrepresented members, women, veterans and people with disabilities equal footing to effectively work with us while at the same time growing their own business

Strengthening Our Commitment

Collaboration: Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity Council

Our Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity Council (DIHEC) is comprised of more than 20 Mission Health team members. These team members represent a variety of roles and locations across Mission Health and are committed to being a catalyst for equity, inclusion and engagement for all.

Inclusion: #123ForEquity

In 2016, Mission Health made an important commitment through the American Hospital Association and the Institute for Diversity to reflect this stance by taking the Equity Pledge to Eliminate Healthcare Disparities, or #123forEquity. The pledge has three areas of focus:

  1. Increase the collection and use of race, ethnicity and language preference data
  2. Increase cultural competency training
  3. Increase diversity in governance and leadership

Language Services

Interpretive Services recognize the needs of patients who are members of linguistic and culturally diverse groups having Limited English Proficiency (LEP), as well as those who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), by providing them with a trained medical interpreter. We will provide interpretive services for any LEP or DHH patient receiving care at any inpatient or outpatient area of the hospital system.

Vision Statement

Interpretive Services will create a system by which Limited English Proficient (LEP) or Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) patients have the opportunity to receive optimal healthcare at all times, equal to that of any English-speaking patient.

Workforce diversity engagement coalition

Mission Health is one of the founding members of the WNC Diversity Engagement Coalition. The DEC brings people together to collectively support the professional development, engagement and inclusion of multicultural professionals within the member organizations in western North Carolina.
