Features of our pediatric heart care program
While we emphasize prevention of common causes that can lead to cardiovascular disease, heart attack and stroke, our pediatric cardiologists place a particular focus on congenital and acquired heart disease. Congenital heart disease is a condition that is present at birth, whereas acquired heart disease can arise from a bacterial infection or inflammation during infancy. When treating the various types of these diseases, we may use one or a combination of the following:
- Cardiac catheterization
- Medication therapy
- Surgery (including heart transplant in severe cases)
Cardiovascular surgery for children
Heart surgery can be overwhelming for both parents and kids, but our pediatric heart surgeons have advanced training in navigating surgical issues unique to children. We have cultivated a kid-friendly atmosphere to make the experience as comfortable as possible, and use child-sized instruments to accommodate their smaller hearts and blood vessels. Additionally, we have a special sedation team to keep them comfortable under constant observation. These specialists will monitor their breathing, heart rate and blood pressure to ensure that they remain relaxed, calm, sleepy and still. When children receive sedation, they may appear very sleepy, but are fully able to breathe on their own and respond to voice and touch.
