What is Mission Health’s approach to offering teenagers access to the patient portal?

Mission Health recognizes the importance of allowing teen access to their own patient portal. By providing an easy way to access personal medical records and communicate with their provider, teens begin to develop the skills needed to take ownership of their health.

This is in alignment with American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians, the Society of Adolescent Medicine and Health, and American College of Physicians recommendations to provide developmentally appropriate care for each person, at every age.1

How do we balance access to information with privacy?

North Carolina and federal laws mandate confidentiality for certain health issues. To ensure privacy, teens between the ages of 13-17 years will have access to their health records through their own patient portal account, but their parent/guardian will not have proxy access.

How does a teen obtain patient portal access?
  • Ask your Mission Health provider about accessing your patient portal if you are between the ages of 13-17.
  • You and your parents must give the provider joint consent for you to have access to your personal patient portal.
  • You will receive an invitation to your patient portal sent to your personal email.
  • You can then create a login and access your personal patient portal.
Can my parent/guardian obtain access to my account?

No. Access is only granted to you through your own personal email account. Providers should advise you not to share your username or password with anyone.

Can my parent/guardian withdraw consent after the teen has created an account?

Yes. Your parent/guardian can withdraw consent at any time by contacting 1-877-621-8014.

Will I be able to see all of my records?

The patient portal allows you to view most of your health information, but not everything is available. Right now, the patient portal includes information such as upcoming appointments, prescriptions, laboratory results, radiology results, cardiology results, pulmonary results, conditions, immunizations, procedures and discharge instructions.

You will also be able to send secure messages to your provider via the patient portal.

Can I use an email address that I share with my parents?

No. You must use your own email address.

How do my parents obtain copies of my medical record?

A parent/guardian may request a copy of medical records from Health Information Management at 828-213-0636.
