Insured by Cigna? Here’s What You Need to Know

Since 1885, Mission Hospital has been pleased to be our community’s longstanding healthcare partner, and we continue to be committed to our region’s wellbeing. No matter what, we are here to keep you and your family healthy and to care for you when major health issues strike.

While Mission Hospital has had a long-standing partnership with Cigna, we want to let you know about important negotiations that are ongoing. Our current Mission Hospital contract with Cigna continues through October 31, 2019. We are actively in discussions with Cigna and hope to reach a positive conclusion on a new agreement prior to that date. Please note that any potential impact will NOT affect other affiliated Mission Health Hospitals, physicians, or providers.

Mission Hospital is your healthcare partner, and we are committed to your wellbeing. We are here to keep you healthy and to help you when a major healthcare issue strikes.

  2. Cigna is a long-standing partner of ours, and we will do everything in our power to ensure they continue to work with us to care for our community by covering your care at Mission Hospital.
  3. We will keep you updated throughout the next several weeks as negotiations continue.
  4. This contract negotiation impacts only Mission Hospital and may impact current participating Cigna physicians who only have admitting privileges at Mission Hospital; the other hospitals (Angel Medical Center, Asheville Specialty Hospital, Blue Ridge Regional Hospital, CarePartners, Highlands-Cashiers Hospital, Mission Hospital McDowell and Transylvania Regional Hospital), as well as Mission Imaging Services and many physicians and other providers within Mission Health.

Is Mission Hospital the only Mission Health facility affected?

Yes, this contract negotiation impacts only Mission Hospital. The other Mission Health hospitals:

  • Angel Medical Center
  • Asheville Specialty Hospital
  • Blue Ridge Regional Hospital
    CarePartners
  • Highlands-Cashiers Hospital
  • Mission Hospital McDowell
    Transylvania Regional Hospital

and many physicians and other providers within Mission Health would remain in-network and will be pleased to serve you and your family any time you need care.

Right now, nothing has changed. If you are insured by Cigna, there will be no changes through Oct. 31, 2019.

What if I am admitted before November 1, 2019 and my stay continues past that date?

If you are admitted inpatient before November 1, 2019, and Cigna has approved your stay, those services will be covered at the in-network benefit level for your entire inpatient stay.

What if I am being treated for an ongoing or chronic condition at Mission Hospital?

Patients who are being treated for an ongoing or chronic condition can apply for Continuity of Care, which will allow you to continue receiving care from your providers on an in-network basis. To apply for Continuity of Care, contact Cigna at the number on the back of your ID Card and request the Continuity of Care form which may allow for continued in-network access per the terms of your Cigna plan.

What if I am pregnant?

Women who are in their second and third trimester of pregnancy as of November 1 can apply for Continuity of Care, which will allow you to continue receiving care with your providers at your in-network benefit level. To apply for Continuity of Care, contact Cigna at the number on the back of your ID Card and request the Continuity of Care form which may allow for continued in-network access per the terms of your Cigna plan.

What does this mean for my primary care doctor?

We understand the importance of maintaining your relationship with your trusted primary care provider.  Most of the Mission Medical Associate physicians should not be impacted, and you should be able to continue to see your physician on an in-network basis.  If you are currently in treatment for a medical condition, please contact Cigna to request Continuity of Care.

What if Mission Hospital is the only nearby location that provides treatment for my condition?

Please contact Cigna at the number on the back of your ID card to request a waiver to receive services at Mission Hospital on an in-network basis.  Most health plans require that healthcare services be available to their members within a defined geographic area to support their members’ access and availability to providers of care.  Mission Hospital and its Team of physicians remain available and ready to assist you with your health care needs.

What should I do in the event of an emergency?

You and your family may continue to receive emergency care at Mission Hospital emergency room with no restrictions or penalties. If you have a medical emergency, call 911 and please go straight to the nearest emergency room.
