At Mission Health, and across our HCA Healthcare network, we’re no stranger to threats. We deal with them daily.
Infectious diseases. Natural disasters. Unspeakable emergencies.
Some may say that managing life-threatening situations is part of business as usual for an advanced healthcare network like HCA Healthcare. And it’s true.
Thankfully, that’s exactly what has helped us build a sharp set of best practices and a robust network of response teams, who help us mobilize quickly and scale accordingly in times of need.
As the threat from the COVID-19 virus is amplified, so too are our efforts. Here are just a few of the steps we are taking to assure uninterrupted care:
We’re limiting entry into hospitals and clinics so anyone who enters into patient care areas can be carefully screened, and masks can be provided to those who need them.
Every employee, caregiver, and physician has been asked to follow a self-screening procedure, because protecting our patients starts with protecting our people.
Precautions taken to treat patients with COVID-19 are similar to those taken to treat patients with influenza, with restricted visitation to limit exposure. This is commonplace procedure for us during any flu season.
As always, cleaning to prevent the spread of infection is occurring throughout all of our care sites.
We are providing care to patients with COVID-19 who require hospitalization. These patients are cared for in isolated areas of the hospital, so we can safely provide continuous care for all other medical needs.
As this latest threat evolves, we are collaborating with federal and local health agencies, providing timely and practical updates that will help contribute to accurate reporting and consistent guidelines. While our immediate priority remains on the well-being of our patients and people, we know that sharing insights can impact care far beyond the communities we serve.

Symptoms of COVID-19 may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and include:

If you are experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat or congestion or if you have travelled to an area affected by the current strain of coronavirus you should consider seeking medical advice. It’s important to keep in mind that there is no treatment for COVID-19 and people who are mildly ill may be able to isolate and care for themselves at home.
Call your physician or seek medical care immediately.
Patients without symptoms or with mild to moderate symptoms will likely not be tested for the virus. A positive test does not change the course of the illness. It’s important to keep in mind that there is no treatment for COVID-19 and people who are mildly ill should self- isolate, do social distancing and care for themselves at home.
You may not be tested for COVID-19 because you do not meet the criteria established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Currently, the CDC advises that clinicians should determine whether to order a test based on specific criteria. COVID-19 tests are not intended to be an assessment of your risk, but rather to confirm cases in symptomatic patients. If you are worried but don’t have symptoms, please stay home. Going to a doctor’s office or hospital adds to a higher concentration of people and further overwhelms the medical staff.

The Mission Virtual Clinic (MVC) is open from 7 am-7 pm. This option is ideal for western North Carolina citizens because it is convenient and helps maintain social distancing, a key method to reduce the coronavirus spread. We cover an array of different illnesses remotely (click here for a full list). If you access the MVC after 7 pm, you will still be allowed to complete the virtual visit; however, you won’t receive a provider response until after 7 am the next day.
